Legendary Axe  Victor (Aicom)1988

[70]***You are Gogan, a muscular powerhouse with enough guts to enter the Pits of Madness. Your mission: rescue the beautiful red-haired Flare. You are strong, but you also have Sting, a sacred axe to help you battle strange creatures and Jagu's savage cult - through mountain, jungle and cave. Increase Sting's power, unlock hidden levels, win extra lives and rescue Flare. If you don't, who will?***This game is one of the best early PC-Engine games. Good graphics and a brilliant soundtrack make this game shine. Gameplay isn't less polished and although it's difficult it stays fair.***

[1]***A Beat'm Up in best 'Kung Fu' or 'Double Dragon' tradition. A bit too easy and short for my taste (except the final boss which I found to be very hard). The graphics are very beautiful with great backgrounds and detailed sprites. Controls are a bit jerky, especially kick-jumping. Despite its flaws I enjoyed the game.***Brave the streets of New York City in this side-scrolling beat-'em-up game. Thugs kidnap the beloved Madonna, and it's up to players to become vigilantes. Players fight their way into enemy territory to get her back. Enemies attack with weapons like iron pipes, chains, guns and motorcycles. To fight back, players can punch, kick or use the "nunchaku" item that appears in the stage. Players must use each of the attacks effectively to defeat their enemies. To clear a stage, defeat the boss that waits at the end. Players fight their way through exciting stages that include the City Streets, Junkyard, Brooklyn Bridge and the Backstreets.

Altered Beast  NEC Avenue (Bits Laboratory)1989Zeus has called upon you! Only a brave and fearless warrior can save his beloved daughter, Athena, from the cunning clutches of Nelf, evil Lord of the Underworld. Risen from the grave, you are presented with supernatural powers beyond this world. Collect the mystical spirit balls and transform into an awesome array of creatures - as Strongman, punch and kick harder than ever before, as WereWolf and WereTiger, rip the flesh of the demons of hell, and as Bear, knock out your enemies with one bad breath! You hear the distant cries of the beautiful Athena and as the terrors of the Underworld tighten their grasp, the beast within you rises to face the final battle!***
[1]***Didn't like the Mega Drive version very much, so my expectations for the PC-Engine version were quite low, but the end result was even worse than I thought. The slow scrolling and mostly slow and unresponsive movements of your character, especially when in human form make the game dull and frustrating.

Neutopia  Hudson Soft1989You are Jazeta, a berserker warrior, fearless in combat. Now you can face your greatest quest: to rescue Princess Aurora from evil Boss Dirth. Conquer a dangerous land of dungeons and demons, magic and monks. Choose which armor, what spell, which weapon you will use to capture each of the 8 medallions that bring you closer and closer to your final battle with demonic Dirth.***

[52]***Neutopia is a bold [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game] rip-off. A princess has been kidnapped, and in order to rescue her you have to recover eight medallions located in dungeons which you have to reach by walking and fighting on the overorld. Trees can be burnt, secret cave entrances been opened by bombs... sounds all very familiar. But in this case I don't care the fact that Hudson so obviously copied Zelda's gameplay, because Neuopia is an excellent piece of software and if you liked Zelda you will love Neutopia. Gameplay is great and the graphics are a step forward from its NES counterpart. There are four different overworlds to explore, the dungeons have nice puzzles and the search for better equipment motivates to play on.
